Make Space Ship evolved from some ideas I had about creating shapes from music – the idea was originally that it would all be controlled by music data streaming into the app from a performer’s laptop. I went to FOTB 2011 as an Elevator Pitch Speaker, and was highly inspired by the talk Joshua Davis gave regarding generative art.

The program was originally developed purely in c++ using openFrameworks. I had to broaden my horizons and learn some Objective-C to incorporate some features that openFrameworks didn’t easily handle, and wound up using it for most of the GUI, data handling and external communication. It uses a cornucopia of external libraries and categories, including:

  • Urban Airship
  • Sincerely Ship
  • ObjectAL
  • TestFlight
  • ZipArchive
  • UIImage+Alpha Category
  • (more)

The Background Music is ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’ as performed by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0. I remixed it using PaulStretch.

The Voices are from the Apollo 16 Mission recordings in the NASA Archive.
